Stumpwork Embroidery book

A Collection of Fruits, Flowers, Insects for Contemporary Raised Embroidery by Jane Nicholas When I first came across stumpwork twenty years ago, I concluded that this was, in fact, a coarse, stiff, rather unappealing embroidery technique. But this new book changed my mind. Why? Its historical account explains the bold stitches, heavily padded surface and generally substantial appearance. Secondly, the author conveys that this is a technique that any experienced embroiderer can use. She also gives instructions for about 17 projects, each illustrated in a color photo. The intricacy of the elements of each design (such detail!) are explained with recommendations for using such modern-day aids as fusible web to build shaped padding.
